• Leonardo, citizen of Milan - permanent exhibit
A museum that enables you to learn more about Leonardo da Vinci. Most people just associate da Vinci with the Last Supper, but in fact he was here for almost twenty years, from 1482 on. A large map of Milan shows where Leonardo worked and lived, and also marks the estate that the Duke gave him in order to make him a true citizen of the city – citizens had to be landowners. There are models of several designs, and some can be tested by visitors. Reproductions of pages from his notebooks document his interest in human anatomy, with figures that are very similar to those of modern day text books.
Downstairs, the focus is on Leonardo's “Treatise on Painting”, a series of essays that he had planned to make into a book, but never finished. Various sections illustrate different themes, such as sculpture, light, shadow and colour. In each section there are interactive experiments, such as how different light sources alter the look of a sculpture. Also in this museum there are collector's items from around the world, including Greek vases, Chinese pottery, African masks and Buddhist sculpture, and a laboratory that illustrates how the genuine articles can be told from the fakes. You can test some of the pieces yourself. The museum is very tourist-friendly, and the explanations are displayed in four languages, Italian, English, German and French.
